Gagen MacDonald is a strategy execution firm specializing in internal communication, employee engagement, culture change and leadership development. Molly Rauzi is the Chief Information Officer, a Team Lead and a Consultant. As CIO for the City and County of Denver and the Denver Airport before that, she also had a broad role within the organization and was involved with developing and executing the business strategy.
Rauzi shared her insights and expertise on the company’s biggest challenge, what was implemented to overcome that challenge and the results after the implementation.

What has been the biggest challenge you have had in your business?
When I first joined Gagen MacDonald, we had a very familial culture. This is a great thing. We did so well serving our clients we began to grow quickly. This growth meant we had to standardize some of our processes and systems. While this has been very helpful in many ways, it has not been easy. We want to keep the culture of innovation and empowerment to serve our clients and respond to their needs while also giving our employees a sense of order and predictable outcomes. For example, we began to break into teams and set specific goals for the firm, each team and each individual. We measured our progress and met our goals. That transparency was really exciting! Interestingly, as we continued to add clarity and process, the culture actually survived just fine. In fact, it has improved in many ways. People have a greater sense of empowerment because they know more about what is expected of them and how to progress in their career. This makes them even more motivated to support the firm and our clients.
What have you implemented to overcome that challenge?
What has allowed us to overcome some of these challenges are our values. Our values have been the guiding principles that kept us together as we moved through formalizing our processes, implementing new systems and clarifying our respective roles and responsibilities. Every person in the firm has contributed to significant improvement over the past several years. Our Chief Operating Officer has lead much of this change while holding a significant leadership position with a key industry association and delivering significant consulting projects herself. Our Account Leads have been incredible. This is an amazing place where we all learn, grow and stretch each other every day. Some days it feels like we take two steps forward and one step back with everything we do, but we are moving in the right direction and it is because we help each other.
What are the results after you implemented your solution?
Our firm has been able to grow our revenue, our team, move our offices and bring on strategic new accounts. It has not been without growing pains, but we are better for it and so are our clients. As we have grown, we have been able to bring even more knowledge and resources to our clients’ issues and opportunities to do the kind of pioneering work we all came together to do. I am very excited about what this next year will bring.
