Working With The Best: Providing Employees Referral Incentives Lands Entrepreneur A Great Staff

Angie and Randy Stocklin launched One Click, an online eyewear company, out of their home in 2005. A year later, they purchased Sunglass Warehouse.com. They continued to expand, adding Readers.com in 2008 and their prescription glasses brand, Felix + Iris, in 2014. Today they have 50 employees all working out of their facility in Greenwood, Indiana. Staffing the departments of their enterprises however, which include warehouse, technology, marketing, merchandising, customer happiness and business intelligence, had always been a challenge.

“Because we are a small, online-only business, located in a suburb of a city, it is often harder for us to recruit great talent to our organization,” says Angie. This challenge has been a primary focus of their business as it grows. “Building a great company requires great people,” Angie says. “Working on creating our employment brand throughout the city is the ultimate goal to solve this problem.” It takes time, Angie admits, to build a great reputation, but One Click has found a solution to fill in the gaps as they build their brand.

“We created an employee referral program that pays our team members for any full time, part time or seasonal team member that is hired on and stays a specified amount of time. Team members are paid $1,000 for referring a full time team member, $500 for referring a part time team member and $100 for any seasonal team member that works for at least three months. Team member referrals speed up the hiring process and increase the likelihood of bringing on new members that are trustworthy and fit in with our company culture.”

To augment this program, One Click stepped up their social media presence on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. “We quickly learned that showing off our company culture on social media increases interest in our brand, and tagging our current team members in those posts spreads awareness about our brands, our location and our open positions.” Their social posts highlight company holiday celebrations, daily ping-pong matches and other employee activities.

Angie admits that they may never completely solve their recruitment problem, but says, “We have seen so much growth and can confidently say we have such a strong team here with us today. The solutions we have implemented will only be enhanced upon over the future.”
