What are the top five things small businesses can do to differentiate in the marketplace to be successful in terms of marketing?
- Stay fresh and current. Identify what businesses are looking for and cater to that. What businesses needed five to ten years ago is not necessarily what they need now.
- Be kind and be honest. It’s basically just the golden rule: treat others the way you want to be treated. It will take you far. You can sometimes get what you want by being untruthful and cut throat, but at the end of the day, you won’t get far.
- Join forces with your industry colleagues. Be friends with other people in your field and help each other! Share ideas, new industry information, etc, and create a supportive network. This will help you network, plus new business can come from it via referrals or collaborative projects.
- Give it a personal touch. Don’t be a press release generator. Think about your audience and the media outlets who would be applicable. As publicists with many different clients, it becomes difficult juggling and getting the word out. I know it’s easier to take short-cuts, but it’s better to do things right than to just get them done.
- Network. Don’t feel like you need to be at every event and out on the town every night. This is not realistic, especially for someone like me who is a mother and lives in the suburbs, but you can network in different ways. Social media is huge and a way that I can stay in the loop. Plus, anytime you have time to chat with someone via phone or meet for coffee, take it. You never know what can come from it!
