While there are some unscrupulous salespeople out there looking to make a quick buck off someone, the truth is that the art of selling a product or service is a natural part of every organization. Plus, if your business is something you believe in, the sales process will be very simple. If you struggle with sales or if you worry that being a salesperson is going to make you seem slimy or dishonest, here are a few things to keep in mind.
Be proud of your product or service
It may seem cliché, but believing in what you sell is a big trick to being great at sales. Many good salespeople will tell you that they can sell anything to anyone, but if you don’t believe in the product you’re selling, then you’ll never feel good about selling it. You’ll also have less confidence in yourself, often leading to bad sales.
Be proud that you are helping others
Get over that tired notion that the sales process takes advantage of people. The truth is that sales helps people find solutions to problems they already have. You have a solution and your job, as a salesperson, is to help your customer see that your solution is the right one. You aren’t creating problems for people, you’re helping with problems that are already existing. Sales is an exchange of value, in which you have something that will help the other person.
Be proud of yourself
Proud selling depends on a very basic belief in yourself. It may seem trite, but the truth is that many good salespeople are also incredibly confident. That’s because they know that they are capable of creating value in the product or service for anyone. If you have the skill to create that value, be proud of it, and be confident that you know how to create much-needed value in what you’re selling.
