How To Stop Worshipping Others And Start Living Your Epic Life

The following is an excerpt from Kute Blackson’s You Are The One: A Bold Adventure in Finding Purpose, Discovering the Real You, and Loving Fully, out now on Simon & Schuster.

No one’s coming.
Really.
No. One. Is. Coming.
The government isn’t going to save you.
Your parents can’t rescue you.
Your friends won’t carry you.
No one’s coming.

I know this firsthand. There was a point in my life, as an eighteen-year-old living in London, when I finally dared to start living the life that I wanted: not the life my parents wanted me to live, not the life my peers expected me to pursue, but the life that deep down felt like the life of my wildest dreams. I moved to America. With nothing. Knowing no one. It was one of the craziest things I’ve ever done. I had finally recognized that I was the only one who could change my life. It was the best choice I ever made.

Your Invitation to an Epic Life

If you feel like you have been holding back who you truly are, the time has come to stop.

Stop holding back. Searching for your purpose. Or what you are supposed to do with your life.

You too were born to have an epic life. To do things with such great love that they are talked about for generations.

Looking for your life purpose is like a fish in the ocean looking for water.

It’s all around you. Just waiting for you to claim it.

I hope by now you realize that an epic life isn’t reserved for only a select few. Spielberg. Oprah. Mandela. Gandhi. Zuckerberg. Jobs.

But it is a birthright for you and me. So if you are waiting for a sign, the fact that you are alive is the very sign you are waiting for.

Your gifts aren’t simply your gifts.

They don’t just belong to you. They belong to the universe. They belong to all of humanity. Everyone is called. Everyone is chosen.

Not everyone says YES to the calling.

Jesus. Buddha. MLK. Mother Teresa. They said yes. They reached for the stars not just for themselves, but to inspire you. They have opened the door and shown you what is possible. Jesus himself said, “The things I do greater than these can you also do.”

I grew up in a church. So take it from me. It’s time to stop worshiping the great ones. That’s right. Stop worshiping Jesus. Worshiping the Buddha. Worshiping Gandhi. For too long we have worshiped them as if they alone were special.

You are the one. Which means you too have inside you the potential to be a great one. We are called not to worship the great ones, but to LIVE their message. Embody it. Even Gandhi himself said, “When I die, burn my books in my cremation.” He didn’t want to be worshiped. He wanted people to follow his example. That is the only kind of worship that matters.

When the great ones saw the trouble brewing in our world, they did not allow their hearts to fill with despair. They saw those challenges as an invitation to step up. A call to give of their love. Practice their compassion. Be who they truly were.

This is your invitation, too. You too were born to have an epic life. To do things with such great love that they are talked about for generations.

You were not born to crawl the valleys but to fly the skies.

Know that you have within you everything you seek. Everything the world needs.

You are the richest person in the world.

YOU. ARE. THE. ONE.
